Why I'm not one among the attorneys supporting Tinubu's mandate - Keyamo

Image
Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo (SAN) has explained why his name is missing on the list of senior lawyers defending the victory of President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.  Remember that the 50-person list of attorneys the All Progressives Congress (APC) released on Tuesday in support of Tinubu. Wole Olanipekun, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, is in charge of the legal team. The legal legend will lead 49 additional attorneys in defending Tinubu's victory at the presidential election tribunal. In order to ensure that Tinubu defeated his bitter rivals Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, who have contested his victory. With 8, 794,726 votes, Tinubu, the APC's standard bearer, defeated Atiku and Obi to claim first place and second and third, respectively, in the presidential election that took place on February 25. He received a Certificate of Return last Wednesday from Prof...

In court, we'll reclaim our mandate. Obi-Datti pledge

Image
Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has informed Nigerians, particularly party supporters, that he and his principal, Mr. Peter Obi, were ready to pursue and recover their mandate through the legal system. He urged Nigerians to keep using their voting rights because democracy belongs to those who can use it. In his first statement following the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) declaration of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of yesterday's presidential election in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed said: "We implore Nigerians to continue to execute their civic obligations." Anyone has the ability to exercise democracy is entitled to it. Nigeria should keep working to put it into practice. Peace is the only language we can communicate in. Obi and I have a greater faith in Nigeria and Nigerians. "We won the election in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but they wouldn't upload the results or use IREV so they cou...

Naira Scarcity: anyone attacking Banks be treated as robbers

Image
Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned that anyone caught attacking banks over the current Naira scarcity will be treated as armed robbers. Remember that this week's Naira shortage has been the cause of multiple reports of attacks on public and commercial establishments, mainly banks. In a Friday night video uploaded on the NPF's Facebook page, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a warning against such attacks and noted that the police will fend them off. We claim that banks ignore us, yet we go to their locations and torch them and smash ATMs, according to Adejobi. If you've demolished their infrastructure, how can you expect them to serve you any better? "I believe that we should educate ourselves on the relevant legal provisions. You don't go to any bank, ATM, or other financial establishment to commit an attack. It is unlawful and is comparable to armed robbery. If you are observed committing an armed robbery, you will be prosecuted. E...

Why Muhammadu Buhari can't overrule Supreme Court decision -- Ozekhome

Image
Mike Ozekhome, a human rights attorney and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), explains why President Muhammadu Buhari is unable to overturn the Supreme Court's decision over the new currency policy. He asserts that it is improper for the President to defy the Supreme Court's directive regarding the old naira notes. Remember that the Federal Government was prohibited from suspending the acceptance of the old naira notes by the apex court in an interim judgment. Yet, Ozekhome referred to the President's directive as a "dicta, more in the manner of a military Edict" in a statement he released on Friday. "Buhari, in his broadcast on Thursday, February 16, 2023, unilaterally varied the apex court's extant order of maintenance of status quo, by directing the CBN Governor to the effect that "the old N200 banknotes be released back into circulation...to circulate as legal tender with the new N200, N500, and N1000 bank notes for 60 days," according to t...
