the Central Bank of Nigeria has excluded the cash/point of sale agents in Abuja and Lagos from the newly launched cash exchange programme.

The development came out on January 31st to phase out the approach of older Notes N1000, N500 and N200.

In a frequently asked questions document released to select agents and obtained by  reporter on Monday, CBN provided some guidance for the cash exchange program.

According to the document, only five banks have been approved to participate in the programme.  They are: Access Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Limited and First City Monument Bank.

It read in part: “Not all agents can participate. This is only open to selected agents who have been identified by the super agent/MMO/Bank and submitted to the Central Bank of Nigeria and participating banks (Access, Zenith, UBA, First, FCMB).

On the number of states selected for the programme, it reads: “Selected Agents in all 36 states (excluding Lagos State and FCT, Abuja). Agents from Lagos and Abuja are excluded from this.”

agents are limited to using the new notes for their normal transactions, just for the software.

Regarding where agents can get the new banknotes, the document added: "From one of these designated banks (Zenith, First Bank, Access, UBA, FCMB). However, you must have a bank account with that bank and your operators (premium agent) will / MMO / bank) by registering in advance with the bank where you have an account.

He added: "You should go to the bank you notified the operator (super agent/MMO/bank). This is where your agent details will be sent for verification when you get there to pick up the new notes."

In addition, each agent's name, BVN number and operator's name are required before new banknotes are issued.

The document added that the bank will also check the agent's photo and fingerprints.

The document also indicated that the agent should have a record of the customer's "know your customer" information, which includes name, telephone number, bank, account number and amount.

It was also noted that as there is no limit on the amount a client can deposit, only N10,000 can be released to each client under the cash swap programme.

CBN also urged officers to open a bank account or wallet for customers with bank accounts.
